German footballer Michel Weiser joins Algeria’s national team after switching allegiance

German Player Weiser May Play For Algeria

Michel Weiser, a right-back currently playing for Werder Bremen, has officially joined the Algerian national football team after switching his international allegiance from Germany.

The move comes after Weiser completed the process of acquiring Algerian citizenship, allowing him to bolster the ranks of the Desert Warriors as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.

The German club confirmed the news, stating that Weiser, who had previously played for various German youth teams, including the U-23 side, successfully navigated the legal procedures to switch his national representation.

This development marks a new chapter in his career, as he looks forward to contributing to Algeria’s footballing ambitions.

Werder Bremen’s Director Confirms the Move

Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s sporting director, took to the social media platform X to announce that Weiser had received an invitation from Vladimir Petkovic, the head coach of Algeria’s national team, to join their training camp in November.

According to Niemeyer, Weiser will travel to Algeria shortly to participate in the national camp, following the completion of all formalities regarding his change in international representation.

“Weiser will be heading to Algeria soon,” Niemeyer confirmed. “He has finished all the necessary legal steps, and he is excited to be part of the national team camp.”

Preparing for Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

During the November camp, Weiser is expected to feature in Algeria’s matches as part of the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to be hosted by Morocco.

The Desert Warriors have already secured their place in the tournament’s finals but will still compete against Equatorial Guinea and Liberia in the upcoming fifth and sixth rounds of the qualifiers.

Weiser’s inclusion is seen as a strategic move by coach Petkovic, who aims to strengthen the team’s defensive line with Weiser’s experience and offensive playing style.

The 30-year-old has been a regular starter for Werder Bremen, amassing over 80 appearances since joining the club in 2021.

A Journey Across Clubs and Continents

Born on April 21, 1994, in Troisdorf, Germany, Michel Weiser began his footballing journey at the Eintracht Veltenhof Academy in 2000.

He later moved to Cologne’s youth academy, where he continued his development until 2007.

His professional career took off with Cologne II from 2011 to 2012 before he joined Bayern Munich’s reserve team.

Weiser’s tenure with Bayern Munich’s first team spanned from 2012 to 2015, during which he also had a brief loan spell with Kaiserslautern in 2013.

He later moved to Hertha Berlin, where he played until 2018, before joining Bayer Leverkusen. In 2021, he signed with Werder Bremen, where he has been a key player since.

A New Dawn for Michel Weiser

The decision to switch his international allegiance represents a new beginning for Weiser, who is eager to make his mark on the international stage with Algeria.

As the team prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, fans are eager to see how the versatile right-back will integrate into the squad and contribute to their success in the upcoming matches.
