The African Football Journalists Association (AFOJA) has expressed profound sorrow and grief following the tragic incident in Nigeria, where seven crew members from SuperSport were abducted while en route to cover the AFCON qualifier between Nigeria and Libya in Uyo on October 11.

Among the abducted crew, one individual was fatally shot, adding further tragedy to an already devastating situation.

In a statement signed by AFOJA Executive Secretary Nuhu Adams, the association decried this senseless act of violence, emphasizing the vulnerability of journalists and media professionals in high-risk areas.

The incident is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work tirelessly to bring the excitement and passion of football to audiences across the continent.

AFOJA called on the authorities in countries like Nigeria to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of media professionals in the discharge of their duties.

The association extended its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased, recognizing the immense loss they have suffered.

“No words can explain or justify what has happened,” the statement read, as AFOJA expressed hope for peace for the victim’s soul.”

This heartbreaking event highlights the need for better protection and support for those who contribute to the world of sports media.
