French football coach Hubert Velud is in line to be appointed as the new head coach of Libya’s national football team, replacing Milutin Sredojević, commonly known as “Micho.”
Velud resigned from his role as head coach of Burkina Faso in February 2024 after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Cote d’Ivoire.
The 65-year-old tactician brings extensive coaching experience, having managed several national teams across Africa.
His task will be to rejuvenate Libya’s footballing fortunes to secure qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Nations, to be held in Morocco next year.
Micho has reportedly been axed as the head coach of the Mediterranean Knights following a dismal opening in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Libya were held at home by Rwanda in a 1-1 stalemate before losing to Benin in the second match earlier this month.
Even though Micho has a strong track record ever since taking over the head coach role, the Libyan Football Federation has decided to let him go.
The Serbian has played a total of 16 matches. He has won nine, drawn five, and lost just twice in the process. Micho also has the longest unbeaten run as Libya’s coach in history.
Velud’s appointment reflects Libya’s ambition to build a competitive squad under the guidance of a seasoned coach.
The French coach has vast experience of working in Africa having previously handled clubs like TP Mazembe, JS Kabylie, Difaa El Jadidi, CS Constantine, Etoile du Sahel, USM Alger, Hassania Agadir, ES Sétif and Stade Tunisien.
He has also coached the Sudan and Togo national teams.
