The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has categorically denied recent rumors suggesting that former Sweden national team coach Janne Andersson has been appointed as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. Speculation had been circulating in the media over the past weekend, claiming that Andersson had been chosen to replace Finidi George, who resigned from the role two months ago after a brief stint in charge.
Contrary to these reports, sources within the NFF have confirmed to *Prompt News* that no appointment has been made for the Super Eagles’ head coach position.
The federation has not selected Andersson or any other candidate for the job, leaving the national team without a permanent manager since the departure of former coach José Peseiro following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire earlier this year.
An unnamed senior official within the NFF has clarified the situation, emphasizing that any announcement regarding the appointment of a new head coach for the Super Eagles will be made through the federation’s official communication channels.
The official urged the public and media to disregard any reports that do not come directly from the NFF Communications Department.
“Please, I have told you whenever you see any news about NFF that was not released officially by the NFF Communications Department, please don’t take it seriously.
At least, you know that NFF has official communication channels, and if an important announcement is to be made, the NFF Communications Department will release it.
We have not appointed anyone yet. This is the true position,” the NFF official stated.
Meanwhile, a source in Sweden provided additional context regarding Janne Andersson’s potential involvement.
The experienced coach, who was dismissed from his role as Sweden’s national team manager in November 2023 after failing to secure qualification for both the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 UEFA European Championship, was reportedly approached by Nigerian authorities some time ago.
However, Andersson is said to have declined the offer.
As of now, it remains unclear when the NFF will make a decision on who will lead the Super Eagles moving forward.
The team, which has been without a stable coaching figure since Peseiro’s resignation, continues to prepare for upcoming international competitions under interim arrangements.
The NFF’s search for a new head coach continues amid growing anticipation from fans and stakeholders eager to see the Super Eagles return to their best form on the continental and global stages.
