Moussa Wague terminates contract with Anorthosis Famagusta unilaterally, club confirms

Moussa Wague, former Barcelona player and best right-back of the past season, has unilaterally terminated his contract with Anorthosis Famagusta, the Cypriot club confirmed in a statement. Wague, who joined Anorthosis Famagusta in July 2023, was conspicuously absent as the team resumed pre-season training, prompting the club to release an official update on the situation.

Despite having found apparent contentment in the Cypriot championship, the 25-year-old Senegalese international has decided to end his contract, initially set to run until May 2026.

The club announced the development through a press release, expressing their surprise and disappointment at Wague’s decision.

“Anorthosis Famagusta informs the following about the footballer Moussa Wague: the footballer was absent without excuse from the start of our team’s training, citing medical reasons, but without adequately justifying them after being requested by our team.

He then unilaterally terminated the partnership. With the footballer, there is no financial expectation. Anorthosis Famagusta reserves its legal rights,” the club stated.

The club’s statement indicates that while there are no immediate financial claims against Wague, Anorthosis Famagusta reserves the right to pursue legal action.

The sudden termination has undoubtedly left the club in a challenging position, as Wague was a pivotal player in their defensive lineup.

Wague had previously expressed his satisfaction with his progress in the Cypriot league during an interview on a Senegalese sports show, SportElles, a month ago.

“My goal is to continue to progress. But as I had a good season there, I am seeing with my agent and the club how we are going to proceed for next season.

But I am happy where I am, I am progressing well. But I would like to take steps forward and I would like to continue my progression elsewhere,” he stated.

This recent development suggests that Wague is looking to advance his career elsewhere, seeking new challenges beyond Cyprus.

His departure from Anorthosis Famagusta, however, raises questions about his next destination and how this abrupt move might affect his professional trajectory.

Anorthosis Famagusta, left to grapple with the sudden loss of a key player, will now have to explore new options to fill the gap left by Wague.

The club’s decision to publicly address the termination underscores the gravity of the situation and their commitment to upholding contractual obligations and professional standards.

Moussa Wague’s unilateral termination of his contract with Anorthosis Famagusta marks a significant and unexpected turn in his career.

As the club reserves its legal rights, the football world watches closely to see where the talented right-back will next ply his trade.

This situation not only impacts Wague’s career but also presents a critical juncture for Anorthosis Famagusta as they navigate the repercussions of this abrupt departure.
