Saturnin Allagbe, the Beninese goalkeeper, has concluded his journey with Dijon in France’s National 1. On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Allagbe played his final match for the club, leading them to a resounding 5-0 victory over Rouen. This triumph marked the end of an era for the 30-year-old goalkeeper, who took the opportunity to bid an emotional farewell to the supporters.

“This victory was important,” said Allagbe, expressing his relief and joy after the match. “It was not easy to come and play here in this context (match canceled then rescheduled).

The match took place, we had the necessary resources to play it and the victory was there in the end,” he added.

Despite a challenging season, which saw Dijon finish fourth in National 1 with Allagbe making only six appearances in all competitions, the goalkeeper remains positive about his time at the club.

Reflecting on his stint with Dijon, Allagbe shared, “In Dijon, I found people who were good on a human level. Even if sportingly, it has been complicated since my arrival, I only keep this positive side.

It was important to end on a good note, to have fun. We responded collectively, we didn’t concede a goal. I’m leaving with my head held high, that’s the most important thing.”

Allagbe’s contract with Dijon, signed in January 2022, ends on June 30, 2024. Despite the difficulties faced during his tenure, he cherishes the positive memories and the relationships built within the club.

His departure signifies a new chapter in his career, one that he approaches with confidence and optimism.

What Lies Ahead for Allagbe?

With his departure from Dijon confirmed, Allagbe’s future is now a subject of keen interest.

The Beninese international, who played a crucial role in Benin’s journey to the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, has expressed a desire to seek new challenges.

Reports suggest that AEK Larnaca, a club in the Cypriot first division, is interested in acquiring his services. If a deal is reached, Allagbe will embark on his second European adventure, following his experience in France.

In the immediate future, Allagbe’s focus shifts to international duty.

He is set to participate in Benin’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Rwanda in June.

With 41 caps to his name, Allagbe’s experience and leadership will be vital as the Benin national team aims to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.

As Allagbe prepares for these upcoming challenges, his departure from Dijon marks the end of a significant chapter in his career.

His contributions to the club, both on and off the pitch, have left a lasting impact, and he leaves with his head held high, ready to embrace new opportunities and continue his professional journey.
