The debate over the DStv Premiership Player of the Season award is heating up, and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has made a compelling case for his South African national team colleague, Ronwen Williams. Bvuma has thrown his full support behind Williams, emphasizing his exceptional performances throughout the season.
Speaking at a press conference last Thursday, Bvuma was unequivocal in his praise for Williams.
“For me, Ronwen has done more than enough to be voted footballer of the season, if we refer to his performances since the previous season, at the start of this season, his participation in the AFCON and in his achievements,” Bvuma asserted.
Last season, Williams was a strong contender for the title, vying alongside Monnapule Saleng and Teboho Mokoena. However, it was Mokoena who ultimately took home the accolade.
This year, Bvuma believes the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper has outshone his competitors.
Williams has kept 29 clean sheets in 42 matches across all competitions, conceding just 15 goals.
His stellar performances have been instrumental in securing Sundowns’ fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title.
“For me, there’s no way Ronwen Williams won’t get this award because he’s worked so hard. Yes, he’s a goalkeeper, but it’s not like he’s the first to win footballer of the season.
For me, he has done enough, but whoever votes will do the work. He is the number one in the national team, he is doing very well on the continent and in his club.
It is obvious that all goalkeepers would like to share the national team’s dressing room and compete with him,” Bvuma added.
Williams’ impressive record and contributions extend beyond the domestic league.
His performances in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and his consistent form at club level have showcased his reliability and skill.
As the number one goalkeeper for the South African national team, his influence and leadership have been invaluable.
The final decision on the DStv Premiership Player of the Season will be made at the Premier Soccer League’s annual awards night.
However, Bvuma’s endorsement highlights Williams’ significant impact this season. His contributions have not only fortified Sundowns’ defense but have also earned him admiration and respect from peers and fans alike.
As the football community eagerly awaits the awards night, Ronwen Williams stands as a deserving candidate for the prestigious title, with a season marked by exceptional achievements and consistent excellence.
