Zimbabwe: Peter Ndlovu takes charge at Scottland FC after Norman Mapeza’s sacking

Warriors legend Peter Ndlovu has been handed his first professional coaching job after Scottland FC appointed him interim head coach following the dismissal of Norman Mapeza.

Ndlovu, who previously served as the club’s team manager, will lead the Mabvuku-based side for the remainder of the season as they pursue domestic silverware following their failure to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stages.

The former Zimbabwe international steps into the role at a crucial stage of Scottland’s campaign, with the club still competing for the league title and a place in the final of the ZIFA Munhumutapa Cup.

Ndlovu gets first coaching assignment

Ndlovu brings considerable football experience to the position, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career before moving into management.

The former Warriors star also served as team manager at Mamelodi Sundowns, gaining experience behind the scenes at one of South Africa’s leading clubs.

He holds a CAF A coaching licence, which qualifies him for a greater range of coaching responsibilities, but his appointment represents his first professional head coaching assignment.

Ndlovu will work alongside Danger Fourpence, who will join the senior team from Scottland’s junior setup as his assistant.

Knowledge Musona will also take on additional responsibilities, doubling up as a player-coach as the club seeks to maintain stability during the transition.

The new technical arrangement comes after Mapeza lost his job following Scottland’s failure to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages, a setback that prompted the club to make a change in leadership.

Ndlovu’s immediate task will be to keep the squad focused and competitive as the season approaches its conclusion.

League title still within reach

Despite the disappointment in continental competition, Scottland remain firmly in the race for the domestic league title.

The club sit second in the standings with 61 points, eight behind leaders Hardrock FC, who have accumulated 68 points.

However, Scottland have two games in hand against CAPS United and Chicken Inn, giving them an opportunity to close the gap if they secure maximum points from those fixtures.

The remaining league matches will therefore be crucial for Ndlovu as he attempts to guide the club towards the top of the table.

With the title race still open, the interim coach will be under pressure to deliver consistent results and ensure that Scottland do not allow their continental disappointment to derail their domestic ambitions.

The team’s position also means that the coaching change comes at a sensitive point in the campaign, with little room for further setbacks if they hope to challenge Hardrock FC for the championship.

Munhumutapa Cup offers another route to silverware

Scottland also have an opportunity to finish the season with a trophy in the ZIFA Munhumutapa Cup.

The Mabvuku-based outfit have reached the semi-finals, where they are scheduled to face Herentals for a place in the final.

Progress in the competition would provide Ndlovu with an opportunity to make an immediate impact in his new role and give the club another chance to secure silverware.

Balancing the demands of the cup competition with their remaining league fixtures will be among his immediate challenges as he settles into the position.

Cioaba and Nees linked with permanent role

Meanwhile, speculation continues over who will take over as Scottland’s permanent head coach at the end of the season.

Sources close to the club indicate that Dynamos coach Aristica Cioaba is a leading candidate to fill the vacancy.

Former Warriors coach Michael Nees has also been linked with the position as Scottland consider their options for the next phase of the club’s development.
