2026 World Cup: I am on a mission, says newly appointed Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz
Carlos Queiroz has pledged to bring discipline, unity and renewed ambition to Ghana’s national team after being unveiled as head coach of the Black Stars, describing his appointment as a “mission” rooted in service, pride and responsibility.
The Portuguese gaffer has replaced Otto Addo as the new head coach of the Black Stars on a short-term deal ahead of the 2026 World Cup this summer in North America.
In a statement released following his confirmation by the Ghana Football Association, the veteran Portuguese tactician expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the four-time African champions into the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle.
“It is with a deep sense of gratitude to the GFA, responsibility and humility that I embrace this new chapter with the National Football Team of Ghana,” Queiroz said, setting the tone for what is expected to be a short but high-pressure tenure.
Queiroz, who takes charge of the Ghana national football team on a short-term contract, reflected on a long career spanning multiple continents, saying football had given him “a lifetime of challenges, lessons and unforgettable journeys.”
He added that he accepts the role with the same “passion and commitment” that has defined his coaching journey over decades.
The 71-year-old, widely regarded for his extensive international experience, also struck an optimistic tone about Ghana’s footballing identity, praising the country’s talent and heritage.
“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride and footballing soul,” he noted. “I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”
His message pointed to a clear philosophy for his tenure: unity, discipline and ambition. He stressed that success would depend on collective effort both on and off the pitch as Ghana seeks to reassert itself on the global stage.
“This is not just another job — it is a mission,” he said, adding that he is ready to dedicate his experience and knowledge “in service of the game and the happiness of people.”
Queiroz’s appointment marks another high-profile chapter in a coaching career that has seen him work with some of world football’s biggest national teams.
For Ghana, the hope is that his experience can stabilise the squad and sharpen their competitiveness ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Queiroz will meet the players next month when the Black Stars regroup for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.
Ghana, preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
After underwhelming outings at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage.
