Zlatko Krmpotic, a Serbian coach and former Red Star Belgrade player, has been in Kinshasa since August 28, sparking curiosity among the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He attended the CHAN 2014 return match between the local Leopards and Cameroon, and he is expected to be present during the TP Mazembe-CA Bizertin match for the 4th day of group matches in the African Champions League.
Krmpotic has expressed his belief in the potential of Congolese football and suggested that the country has the qualities to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He emphasized the need for a change in the national team’s policy, especially in coaching younger players. Krmpotic sees a disparity between the quality of players produced by the country and the results achieved at the national team level.
He stated, “If there was dynamic work in the organization of the selection of players, the DRC could have done much better.” While there are speculations that Krmpotic might be appointed as the new coach of the Congolese national team following the resignation of Claude Le Roy in June, there has been no official confirmation from Congolese football authorities as of yet.
