Zimbabwe national team coach Michael Nees insists that nothing is decided yet in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, despite the team sitting at the bottom of Group C with just two points from four matches.
The Warriors are set to resume their bid for qualification with a crucial home fixture against Benin at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on March 20, followed by a tough away encounter against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Uyo on March 25.
Speaking to Herald.co.zw, Nees highlighted the competitive nature of the group, emphasizing that with six matches remaining and 18 points still available, the battle for qualification remains open.
“No team is certain of their position yet, even the group leaders can slip. It’s important that we keep fighting until the last match to maintain a fair and competitive race,” he stated.
While securing a place at the World Cup remains the primary objective, Nees also views these matches as valuable preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He stressed the importance of making a strong restart in the qualification campaign to build positive momentum.
Looking ahead to the match against Benin, Nees acknowledged the challenge his side will face. Benin have already proven their strength by defeating and drawing with Nigeria, in addition to securing AFCON qualification.
The Zimbabwe coach is well acquainted with Benin’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, but assured that their personal connection will not affect the competitive nature of the match.
Nees is set to announce the squad for the two qualifiers on Wednesday, March 12, as Zimbabwe aim to reignite their World Cup hopes in the crucial upcoming fixtures.
