Zambia stun Togo to lead at half-time in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Zambia lead Togo at half-time in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The Chipolopolo took an early advantage in the second-round meeting, scoring just three minutes after kick-off to unsettle a Togo side that had travelled with confidence following their victory over Burundi.

The opening goal came from a long throw-in, which the Togolese defence struggled to clear. Alfred Kangwanda was left unmarked around the penalty spot and made no mistake, beating Malcolm Barcola with a powerful finish.

Togo attempted to respond and gradually began to find their rhythm. The Eperviers had started brightly and continued to push for an equaliser until the 22nd minute, when play was interrupted for almost 20 minutes.

The stoppage did not reduce the intensity after the match resumed. Both sides returned with the same energy, with Charles Abi the first to threaten for Togo, although he failed to keep his effort on target.

Zambia then regained control and came close to doubling their lead towards the end of the first half. The Chipolopolo striker’s header struck Barcola’s right-hand post, sparing the Eperviers from conceding a second goal before the break.

Togo head coach Patrice Neveu will now have the interval to make tactical changes and reorganise his side as they look to put greater pressure on Zambia in the second half.
