Zambia has launched preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a 30-man provisional squad revealed by coach Wedson Nyirenda.
The residential training camp, beginning this weekend, marks a critical phase as the team gears up for the continental competition set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in February.
Coach Nyirenda has selected a blend of seasoned professionals and emerging talents, showcasing the depth of Zambian football.
This balanced approach is designed to build a cohesive and competitive squad capable of challenging for top honors.
Speaking about the team’s composition, Nyirenda emphasized the potential of the young players and the importance of intensive preparation to meet the demands of CHAN.
The group has high potential, and this phase of preparation is vital to creating a team that can contend with the best,” Nyirenda remarked.
Qualification secured, focus intensifies
Zambia’s qualification for CHAN was confirmed after Mozambique withdrew from the competition, providing the Chipolopolo with a direct entry into the tournament.
With the draw for the group stage yet to be held, the Zambian team is taking this time to refine strategies and address potential challenges posed by future opponents.
The residential camp builds upon weekly training sessions already organized for local players, aimed at maintaining fitness and fostering team cohesion.
The coaching staff will use these intensive sessions to evaluate player performances and finalize tactical setups for the tournament.
The unexpected withdrawal of Mozambique allowed us to focus entirely on preparation, which is crucial for building confidence and readiness ahead of CHAN,” said a team official.
