Zamalek Shortlists Three High-Profile Coaches to Succeed Hossam Hassan
Zamalek SC is expected to announce its new head coach in the coming days, with the Cairo-based club confirming a shortlist of three prominent international names to succeed Hossam Hassan.
The candidates are Jorge Luis Pinto, Carlos Bianchi, and Héctor Cúper — all seasoned tacticians with impressive résumés, though none with prior coaching experience in Africa.
The most recognisable name on the list is Argentine football legend Carlos Bianchi. A revered figure at Boca Juniors, Bianchi won an extraordinary four Copa Libertadores titles during his time with the Argentine giants and is regarded as one of South America’s most successful club coaches. Currently unattached, Bianchi was last seen returning briefly to Boca in an attempt to steady the ship during a difficult spell in 2014.
Also under serious consideration is Jorge Luis Pinto, who captured global attention as the mastermind behind Costa Rica’s sensational run to the quarter-finals at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Pinto’s disciplined, counter-attacking style stunned football’s elite as his side topped a group containing Uruguay, Italy, and England — before falling to the Netherlands on penalties.
The third name in contention is Héctor Cúper, an Argentine manager best known for his stints in European football. Cúper led Valencia to back-to-back UEFA Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001 and has managed several major clubs including Inter Milan and Real Betis. His most recent role was with Turkish side Orduspor.
Despite their strong pedigrees, none of the shortlisted candidates have managed in Africa — a detail that may weigh heavily in the final decision, given the unique challenges of coaching on the continent, including player management, travel logistics, and domestic league dynamics.
Zamalek, one of Egypt’s most successful and popular clubs, is aiming to return to both domestic and continental glory after a turbulent period. Hossam Hassan, who returned for a second spell as manager, departed following a disappointing run of results.
The club’s board, known for its high expectations and frequent coaching changes, is reportedly seeking a manager capable of instilling tactical discipline while revitalising the squad with a modern approach. With Egypt’s Premier League season approaching a critical phase, the pressure is on to secure a swift appointment.
The decision could signal a bold new direction for Zamalek — and for Egyptian football more broadly — as clubs increasingly look beyond local options to attract international expertise.
An announcement is expected before the end of the week.
