Zamalek midfielder Juan Bezerra Alvina breaks silence on Super Cup handshake controversy

Zamalek midfielder Juan Bezerra Alvina has addressed the controversy surrounding his failure to shake hands with Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, during the medal ceremony of the Egyptian Super Cup, which saw Al-Ahly crowned champions over Zamalek.

The incident, which quickly went viral on social media, sparked heated debate among fans and commentators, with many questioning whether Bezerra’s gesture was intentional.

The player has now publicly clarified his position, stressing that there was no disrespect intended toward any official or attendee.

In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Bezerra sought to explain the moment that drew criticism, writing:
“I would like to clarify to the Egyptian sports officials and Zamalek fans that I never intended, in any way, to show any inappropriate behavior in the VIP suite during the last match and I will never hesitate to show respect to everyone at all times. Unfortunately, my actions were interpreted differently. I was in a state of shock and frustration after losing the title, because it was very important to me, to the club, to the fans, and to the whole group.”

Bezerra’s explanation comes as Zamalek supporters and pundits continue to reflect on the disappointing defeat in the final, which saw Al-Ahly lift yet another domestic trophy.

The emotional intensity of the match, coupled with the high stakes of the Super Cup, appears to have contributed to the misunderstanding.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who joined the Cairo giants earlier this year, reiterated his respect for everyone involved in Egyptian football and emphasized his professionalism and sportsmanship both on and off the field.

“I reiterate my full respect for all officials and supporters, and my deep appreciation for the club I represent,” Bezerra added. “I have spoken with the club’s management and football department to clarify the situation. I reaffirm my commitment to sportsmanship on and off the field and sincerely apologize for any unintentional mistake on my part.”

His apology was met with a mixed response from fans online — with many appreciating his gesture, while others insisted the incident could have been avoided.

However, within Zamalek’s management, Bezerra’s prompt clarification and public apology were reportedly viewed as a step in the right direction toward closing the matter.

The episode serves as a reminder of how emotions can run high in Egyptian football, particularly in the fierce rivalry between Al-Ahly and Zamalek, where even the smallest actions can take on outsized meaning.
