Zamalek were dealt a worrying setback in their 2-2 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra on Friday, as key midfielder Nasser Maher picked up an ankle injury during the first half at the Arab Contractors Stadium.
The incident occurred in the 37th minute when Maher twisted his ankle trying to skip past a Ceramica defender. Realizing the potential severity, Zamalek coach Ayman Al-Ramadi wasted no time in replacing him with Hossam Ashraf.
Club medical chief Mohamed Osama confirmed the injury was a sprained ankle, stating on the club’s website that the player would undergo scans to assess the damage.
“Nasser Maher has suffered a sprained ankle and will undergo an x-ray in the coming hours to assess his condition,” said Osama.
Zamalek await the results of the tests to determine the treatment plan and timeline for the midfielder’s return to training.
The draw leaves Zamalek in third place with 41 points, while Ceramica Cleopatra, managed by Ali Maher, climbed to sixth with 31 points.
The White Castle now hope their midfield engine won’t be sidelined for long.
