Zamalek SC’s hopes of securing the Egyptian League title took a devastating hit after the Egyptian Clubs Association overturned a key ruling in the summit match saga against Al Ahly.
On Thursday, the Zamalek board, led by Hussein Labib, lodged an appeal with the Egyptian Football Association’s Appeals Committee, challenging last Sunday’s decision that erased a point deduction initially imposed on their rivals. The original ruling stemmed from Al Ahly’s refusal to face Zamalek on March 11, citing the absence of a foreign referee crew.
The association had awarded Zamalek a 3-0 win and stripped Al Ahly of three extra points, a call that also slapped fines on Al Ahly for pulling out. But the league’s U-turn, scrapping the deduction, infuriated Zamalek and fellow contenders Pyramids FC.
In response, Zamalek issued a fiery statement on Thursday, vowing to fight for fairness.
“The Zamalek Club’s Board of Directors adheres to its firm and clear position of refusing to circumvent the decisions of the Competitions Administration regarding the penalties for the last summit match, in order to maintain the application of justice and transparency and not to favor one party over the other, regardless of the justifications,” it read.
