Zamalek’s highly anticipated Egypt Cup quarter-final showdown with Smouha has been pushed back by 24 hours, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed on Saturday.
Originally set for Friday, March 14, the match will now take place on Saturday to accommodate scheduling adjustments in the Egyptian League, where Zamalek is set to face Al Ahly on March 11.
“The postponement was due to the circumstances of determining the Zamalek match with Al Ahly in the championship stage in the Egyptian League on March 11,” the EFA stated.
Zamalek punched their ticket to the quarter-finals after edging past Modern Sport with a hard-fought 2-1 victory on Friday night.
Just five minutes into the Round of 16 encounter, Dunga capitalized on a defensive error from Modern Sport’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Magdy. After latching onto a precise cross from Ahmed Mustafa “Zizou,” the midfielder rose high to head the ball into the net, giving Zamalek an early lead.
With the match locked at 1-1, 39-year-old Shikabala stepped up in extra time, meeting Zizou’s cross from the left and guiding the ball into an empty net.
Supporters of both clubs who had marked the original date on their calendars will now have to make new plans as the two sides prepare to battle for a spot in the next round.
