Zakaria El Ouahdi voices disappointment after Morocco snub
Zakaria El Ouahdi has expressed his frustration after being overlooked by Morocco coach Walid Regragui for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Niger and Zambia.
The 22-year-old right-back, who plays for Belgian side Genk, admitted he was surprised not to feature in the squad despite his consistent performances at club level.
Speaking to Belgian media, the defender revealed a mixture of disappointment and understanding at the decision, acknowledging the presence of Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi in his position.
“I am also surprised,” El Ouahdi said. “Now, with the presence of Achraf Hakimi, the best full-back in the world, it is difficult for me to play for the national team. But the most important thing for me is to help my country’s national team, no matter where I play. I would have been so proud to be called up.”
Competition for places
Morocco’s defensive options remain highly competitive, with Hakimi widely regarded as one of the finest right-backs in world football. His importance to the national side has left limited opportunities for emerging players such as El Ouahdi to secure a regular role.
Despite his omission, the Genk defender refrained from criticism of the coaching staff, instead emphasising his respect for Hakimi and his continued ambition to represent the Atlas Lions. El Ouahdi made clear that his priority lies in supporting the national team, whether or not he is selected.
Determination to return
The Moroccan international, who has already experienced the pride of wearing his nation’s colours, remains determined to reclaim a spot in future squads. His comments reflected both humility and perseverance, signalling his intent to keep working hard at club level in hopes of catching the attention of Regragui and his coaching staff.
“I would have been so proud to be called up,” he repeated, underscoring his commitment to the national side. “I will keep giving my all at club level, and I hope in the future I can be part of the success of my country.”
Morocco’s focus on major tournaments
Regragui’s decision comes at a crucial period for Morocco. The Atlas Lions have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, following their impressive displays in the African qualifiers. The squad is also preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Morocco will host.
With both tournaments carrying immense importance for Moroccan football, the national team coach is expected to rely heavily on experienced figures such as Hakimi, Romain Saïss, and Sofyan Amrabat, while gradually integrating younger players into the setup.
Looking ahead
For El Ouahdi, the path back into the national team may prove challenging, but his resolve suggests he will remain in contention. His development at Genk continues to attract attention, and consistent performances at club level could strengthen his case for inclusion in future squads.
As Morocco prepare for their forthcoming fixtures, the defender’s remarks serve as a reminder of the depth of talent available to Regragui and the challenges faced by rising players competing with world-class stars for a place in the side.
