Atlético Madrid Set to Sign Zakaria Bakkali, Loan Move to Lille Likely
Belgian teenager Zakaria Bakkali is reportedly close to signing with Spanish champions Atlético Madrid, according to Africa Top Sports. The 18-year-old winger, who has refused a contract extension with PSV Eindhoven, could make the switch for a fee between €2 million and €3 million.
Bakkali was spotted in Belgium on Friday evening as a guest of Marc Coucke, president of KV Oostende, during their match against Anderlecht. His appearance added fuel to speculation over his future.
Although Atlético Madrid are poised to secure his signature, Bakkali may not head to La Liga immediately. Instead, he is expected to be loaned to Ligue 1 side Lille for the 2014–15 season. The move would allow the Belgian youth international to get regular playing time and rebuild his match fitness—similar to the recent arrangement that saw Divock Origi sign for Liverpool and return to Lille on loan.
Luc Devroe, Lille’s sporting director, confirmed the club’s interest, indicating the loan deal could soon be finalised.
If confirmed, the deal would offer Bakkali a clear path to development while allowing Atlético to secure one of Belgium’s most exciting young talents for the future.
