Youssef Belammari’s arrival at Al Ahly has been greeted with optimism, but the Moroccan left-back steps into Cairo aware that reputation alone will not guarantee success at Africa’s most decorated club.

Signed from Raja Club Athletic after weeks of negotiations, Belammari has been handed the task of reinforcing a position that carries heavy historical weight at Al Ahly, where expectations are immediate and unforgiving.

Born in Morocco and established at club and international level, Belammari arrives with continental pedigree after featuring in the Atlas Lions squad that finished runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

Yet his transition into Al Ahly life presents a series of challenges that will define whether his move becomes a platform for growth or another cautionary tale.

The first test lies with head coach Jess Thorup. The Danish manager is understood to have retained some reservations about Belammari’s profile after assessing his performances in Morocco, and early indications suggest that Ahmed Nabil Koka remains the preferred option at left-back.

While opportunities are expected to come, Belammari must use them decisively to reshape the coach’s thinking and establish himself within the tactical framework.

Beyond selection battles, the shadow of Ali Maaloul looms large. Few positions at Al Ahly carry the emotional and technical legacy of left-back, shaped by Maaloul’s seven trophy-laden years.

Comparisons are inevitable and often unfair, yet they have undone previous signings. Belammari’s challenge will be to resist that weight, forging an identity built on consistency, intensity and balance at both ends of the pitch rather than imitation.

Equally important is the need for swift integration. Al Ahly’s system demands understanding and rhythm, particularly on the left flank where coordination with the winger and nearest centre-back is essential. Building that chemistry quickly will be vital if Belammari is to avoid drifting on the fringes.

There is, however, a stabilising presence in the dressing room. Fellow Moroccan Achraf Bencharki has already played a role in easing Belammari’s transition, helping him navigate the club’s demanding environment and reinforcing the message that success at Al Ahly is built on unity as much as talent.
