Algerian star Youssef Belaili, a key figure for Esperance Sportive de Tunis, finds himself at the center of a developing storm in the Tunisian Professional League.
On Friday, the league delayed its ruling on a complaint lodged against Belaili, accused of making inappropriate gestures during a match against Chabab Omrane.
The investigation unfolded that same day, with Belaili’s testimony heard as Esperance’s legal team pushed hard to have the case dismissed. The league, however, opted to hold off on a final call, scheduling the next session for April 11.
Esperance currently sits atop the league standings with 53 points, neck-and-neck with Monastir Union, while Club Africain trails just behind at 52. Adding to the tension, Esperance recently fell 1-0 to South Africa’s Sundowns in the CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg in Pretoria.
The second leg looms large next Tuesday at Stade Olympique de Rades, where Belaili and his squad will look to turn the tide. For now, all ears await the league’s verdict.
