Young Africans new coach Manqoba Mngqithi reveals Champions League ambition behind move
South African tactician Manqoba Mngqithi has broken his silence following his appointment as head coach of Tanzanian giants Young Africans, revealing that the opportunity to return to the CAF Champions League was a major factor behind his decision.
Mngqithi was officially unveiled by the newly crowned Tanzanian champions after the club completed a successful domestic campaign without a permanent head coach. The experienced coach now takes charge of a team with huge expectations and ambitions on both the local and continental stage.
Speaking on SABC Sport, Mngqithi expressed his excitement about joining Young Africans and highlighted the club’s professionalism and desire to compete among Africa’s elite.
“It’s always exciting,” Mngqithi said.
“I just wanted to be back into the Champions League space and see what can happen. And an ambitious club that is willing to try and bring some players to make sure that we can achieve our objectives.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns FC coach explained that returning to the CAF Champions League environment was one of his biggest motivations, having gained extensive continental experience during his time in South Africa.
Mngqithi played a key role in Sundowns’ dominance in domestic football and their consistent participation in African competitions. His arrival at Young Africans represents a fresh challenge as he looks to translate his experience into success outside South Africa.
The Tanzanian giants have established themselves as one of East Africa’s most ambitious clubs, regularly competing for domestic honours and aiming to make a bigger impact in CAF competitions.
Mngqithi praised the structure and professionalism he has found at the club, describing the environment as one that matches his ambitions.
“Very professional setup that is very encouraging for me. “And it’s something that I’ve always been looking forward to, to be back in the Champions League and see how far can I take the East of Africa in the Champions League.”
The appointment signals Young Africans’ intention to compete at a higher level on the continent. The club has invested heavily in building a competitive squad and now believes Mngqithi’s experience, tactical knowledge and Champions League background can help them achieve greater success.
During his coaching career, Mngqithi has developed a reputation as one of South Africa’s most respected tacticians, known for his tactical flexibility, player development and ability to build competitive teams.
His move to Tanzania also presents an opportunity to test himself in a different football environment while attempting to raise the profile of East African football on the continental stage.
The immediate challenge for Mngqithi will be preparing Young Africans for the upcoming season, strengthening the squad where necessary and ensuring the club remains dominant domestically while making a deeper run in the CAF Champions League.
With a club that shares his ambition and a clear desire to compete against Africa’s best, Mngqithi believes the move provides the perfect platform to continue his coaching journey and pursue further continental success.
