Younes Belhanda has spoken out after being ignored by Montpellier, the club where he made history in 2012.
Now playing for Qatari side Al Shamal, the Moroccan midfielder revealed that he offered to return to his former club during their poor run last winter, but never heard back.
In an interview with RMC Sport, Belhanda detailed how he reached out directly to club president Laurent Nicolin during the January 2024 transfer window.
“When I saw that the team was going through a crisis, I reached out to Laurent and I said to him: ‘If you need me, I’m ready to come back, even if only for six months.’ I told him to give me what you want, I don’t have any conditions. But I have not received any response, neither by acceptance nor rejection.”
Belhanda, who played a vital role in Montpellier’s 2012 Ligue 1 title win, expressed disappointment at being overlooked and criticized the club’s spending on “useless deals.” He also called for a complete overhaul of the club’s management, saying it’s time to bring in fresh leadership after 15 years of stagnation.
