Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has clarified his decision to exclude goalkeeper Andre Onana from the squad for Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The Cameroonian international was left out following a series of high-profile errors, including a costly performance in the recent 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon.
Amorim stated that the decision was made to alleviate pressure on Onana, who has faced intense scrutiny over his performances.
“We are going to prepare to choose the best XI that we think can win.
“I left him at home because any situation of the game, the cameras would be on him and he was not playing, he would be on the bench but feeling the pressure, feeling the moment.
“So, for me, it was one thing or another – you play or you stay at home. It was my choice.”
In Onana’s absence, backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made his Premier League debut but struggled, conceding four goals, including a critical error that led to Newcastle’s fourth goal.
The defeat marked United’s 14th league loss of the season, their worst performance since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
Onana’s omission follows a string of mistakes in both domestic and European competitions.
Notably, he has committed more errors leading to goals in the UEFA Champions League since 2018 than any other goalkeeper. His recent performances have raised concerns about his form and confidence.
