Yaya Touré, the Ivorian football legend and current assistant coach of Saudi Arabia, shared his thoughts on his role as the ambassador of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) and his aspirations for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2024.
Appointed as the FIF ambassador on June 30, Yaya Touré expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him and highlighted his commitment to supporting the Ivorian national team, known as the Elephants, especially in navigating the pressures associated with international competitions like AFCON.
“As a former captain of the national team, I perfectly understand the pressure that players can feel, I will have to find the right words, while sharing my experience with them,” Touré stated during the press conference.
He emphasized his role in representing the values of excellence and hospitality that characterize Côte d’Ivoire.
Beyond the symbolic significance of his ambassadorial role, Yaya Touré outlined his broader ambitions, focusing on contributing to the development of football in Africa, particularly in Ivory Coast.
He expressed a desire to inspire the new generation of sporting talents, improve the international image of Côte d’Ivoire, and ensure the success of AFCON 2024 as a sporting and cultural showcase.
Touré underscored the importance of unity and support from Ivorians for the national team, stating, “I trust the Elephants and coach Jean-Louis Gasset to make us proud.
They need all the support and encouragement they can get.”
Reflecting on the efforts invested in hosting AFCON 2024, Yaya Touré commended the authorities for rehabilitating infrastructure and building new stadiums in Abidjan.
He recognized President Amichia’s commitment to providing an exceptional experience for participants and visitors.
While acknowledging Ivory Coast’s strong team, Yaya Touré also identified Senegal, Morocco, Guinea-Bissau, and South Africa as nations with impressive performances during qualifying, positioning them as potential contenders for the tournament.
As one of the FIF ambassadors, Yaya Touré, alongside Gadji Céli and Didier Drogba, carries the responsibility of promoting Ivorian football and contributing to the success of AFCON 2024, fostering anticipation and excitement among football enthusiasts.
