Yaya Toure emerges as surprise candidate for Slovan Bratislava head coach role
A former Manchester City icon, Yaya Toure, has emerged as a surprise candidate for the head coaching position at Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava, as the club weigh options to replace departing manager Vladimir Weiss Sr., according to reports from Slovak outlet ŠPORT.sk.
The four-time African Footballer of the Year, who enjoyed a glittering playing career across Europe, is understood to be part of an evolving shortlist that includes several international names as Slovan reshape their technical leadership ahead of a crucial period in domestic and European competition.
The possibility of Toure stepping into senior management has generated considerable attention given his limited but steadily developing coaching background.
After the departure of Vladimir Weiss Sr., Slovan Bratislava are accelerating their search for a new head coach, with club officials working through a shortlist of foreign and domestic candidates.
General director Ivan Kmotrik Jr. has moved to dismiss speculation linking the club with Zsolt Hornyak and Czech coach Tomas Janotka, while confirming that discussions are ongoing with selected profiles as the Slovak champions aim to make a decision within the next fortnight.
“We don’t want to drag this out. We want to resolve it as quickly as possible, but it’s not an easy decision, so we definitely won’t make any hasty or rushed choices,” Kmotrik was quoted as saying by ŠPORT.sk.
The club’s leadership is determined to avoid prolonged uncertainty, prioritising stability ahead of their upcoming campaign.
Toure’s playing career is defined by success at the highest level, having won two LaLiga titles and a UEFA Champions League crown with Barcelona before becoming a Premier League champion and club icon at Manchester City, where he also secured three league titles.
Since retiring, however, his coaching journey has been relatively modest, with assistant roles at Olimpik Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny, Standard Liege, and most recently within Roberto Mancini’s coaching setup with the Saudi Arabian national team.
He has been unattached since October 2024, leaving his next move open to speculation as he builds experience off the pitch.
According to Slovak media, Igor Biscan is currently regarded as the leading candidate for the vacancy, having already held discussions with Slovan since last December.
The former Liverpool midfielder has coached Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia’s U21 national team, and Saudi side Al Shabab, bringing significantly more managerial experience than other contenders.
While Toure’s name adds global intrigue to the process, the club’s decision is expected to balance ambition with proven coaching pedigree as they prepare to finalise an appointment in the coming weeks.
