Yassine Bounou, the Moroccan international goalkeeper, has shed light on his departure from Sevilla FC in Spain last summer, citing personal reasons for his move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Bounou’s transition from Sevilla to Al Hilal marked a significant shift in his career trajectory, driven by the challenges he faced while plying his trade in Andalusia.
Speaking candidly about his decision, Bounou revealed the struggles he endured during his time at Sevilla, emphasizing the toll it took on his well-being.
“It was no longer easy for me. I had very little life. I tried everything, thinking I would succeed with my experience, but I couldn’t.
Consequently, I could no longer continue emotionally, and I therefore had to change environment for my mental health,” Bounou disclosed during an interview following Al Hilal’s triumph in the Saudi Arabian Super Cup.
The goalkeeper expressed gratitude for the opportunity Sevilla provided him while acknowledging the difficult decision to depart from the club.
Despite fond memories of his time in Spain, Bounou emphasized the importance of prioritizing his mental and emotional well-being, which ultimately guided his choice to pursue a new chapter in Saudi Arabia.
Reflecting on his decision to embrace the Saudi opportunity, Bounou expressed confidence in his current trajectory, suggesting that remaining at Sevilla would have hindered his performance. ”
I no longer had the energy to continue giving everything to the club when the opportunity to leave presented itself to me. If I had stayed, my performance would not have been the same,” he remarked.
While cherishing the memories and experiences gained at Sevilla, Bounou remains resolute in his commitment to Al Hilal, where he believes he can thrive both professionally and personally.
As he embarks on this new journey, Bounou’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health and making courageous decisions for one’s well-being in the pursuit of fulfillment and success in football.
