Yamal turns to LeBron and Neymar as Barcelona chase Champions League comeback
Lamine Yamal has revealed the sources of inspiration fuelling his belief in a dramatic European turnaround as FC Barcelona attempt to overturn a first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Catalan side travel to the Metropolitano on Tuesday facing a daunting challenge after slipping to a 2-0 defeat in the opening leg.
Despite that setback, optimism remains within the Barcelona camp that a place in the final four is still attainable, with Yamal emerging as one of the key figures expected to drive the comeback bid.
At just 18, the winger has already developed a reputation for thriving under pressure. His performances over the past year have elevated him into the elite bracket of world football, and Barcelona’s hopes of progression rest heavily on his ability to unlock Atletico’s disciplined defensive structure.
Inspired by greatness
In the build-up to the decisive second leg, Yamal pointed to two iconic figures from different sporting worlds as sources of motivation: LeBron James and Neymar.
The teenager drew particular inspiration from James’ legendary NBA Finals comeback in 2016, when he led the Cleveland Cavaliers to overturn a 3-1 series deficit against the Golden State Warriors. Yamal even updated his social media profile to reflect that moment, signalling his mindset heading into the clash in Madrid.
“He’s one of the reference points that can inspire me for tomorrow’s game, that’s why I put him there,” Yamal told reporters.
“I will think about what he did and I hope it goes the same way for me.”
Closer to home, Neymar’s role in Barcelona’s historic 2017 Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain remains deeply influential for the young winger. That night, often regarded as one of the most remarkable turnarounds in football history, saw Barcelona recover from a 4-0 first-leg loss to win 6-1 and advance.
“I’ve watched that game many times and saw it live too,” said the 18-year-old.
“Neymar is a player who has marked all of my childhood, he is my idol, I will be grateful to him forever for what he has given football.
“He’s the kind of player you buy a ticket to watch… I hope he can be at the World Cup.”
Tactical battle and expectations
Barcelona’s path to the semi-finals will require a significant tactical improvement, particularly in attacking areas where they struggled to impose themselves in the first encounter. Atletico’s defensive organisation, orchestrated with typical intensity, limited Yamal’s influence by crowding him out of key spaces.
The Spanish-Moroccan winger was frequently double and even triple marked, restricting his ability to isolate defenders in one-on-one situations, which has become his greatest strength. Overcoming that challenge will be central to Barcelona’s chances of mounting a comeback.
Head coach Hansi Flick has emphasised the importance of allowing Yamal to operate in scenarios where he can maximise his individual brilliance.
“I think Lamine has performed really well in the last games, and what I say to him is he has to do the things where he’s the best in the world at the moment – one against one situations,” said Flick.
Yamal himself is hopeful that the tactical dynamics of the return leg may offer him greater freedom to influence proceedings.
“I feel very good and really looking forward to tomorrow’s game, I hope I can make the difference,” he added.
“Let’s see if (Simeone) does me a favour and leaves me one on one against a player.”
A rising star under the spotlight
Yamal’s rapid ascent has been one of the defining stories of European football over the past year. After playing a pivotal role in Barcelona’s domestic treble success last season, he has continued to evolve into a decisive figure on the biggest stages.
His recognition on the global stage, including a runner-up finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings, underscores the expectations placed upon him despite his age. Nights like this, against a formidable Atletico side, represent both a challenge and an opportunity to further cement his status among the game’s elite.
Barcelona’s recent European history adds further context to the occasion. Having fallen short at the semi-final stage last season, the club is eager to take the next step and re-establish itself as a dominant force on the continent. Achieving that ambition will require not only tactical discipline but also moments of individual brilliance.
