Nigeria international Nathan Tella believes former Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso will thrive at Real Madrid, insisting the Spaniard has what it takes to build on his remarkable achievements in Germany.
Alonso, who led Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title and a UEFA Europa League final in the 2023–24 season, was appointed manager of Los Blancos in June.
The 43-year-old signed a three-year deal to replace Carlo Ancelotti and returned to the club where he enjoyed success as a player.
Tella, who played under Alonso at Leverkusen, praised his former manager’s tactical intellect and personal influence.
He said Alonso’s methods changed his outlook on the game and believes the Spanish coach is poised to succeed at one of football’s most demanding clubs.
“Obviously, Alonso is a brilliant manager… he was able to bring a different side to the game to us,” Tella told Flashscore.
“He’s arguably been the best manager in the past two years… I think he’ll get even better than how he was with us.”
Alonso has already led Real Madrid to the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, winning four out of five matches before suffering a 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Tella is confident about Leverkusen’s chances in next season’s UEFA Champions League, with the club returning to the competition after finishing second in the Bundesliga.
Now coached by Erik ten Hag, Leverkusen begin their pre-season tour in Brazil this week.
“I believe we understand what it takes to reach the top eight,” Tella said. “It’s about maintaining maturity… adopting a killer mentality… and playing with confidence and consistency.”
