Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has clarified his decision to start Brazilian-Cameroonian forward Vinicius Junior on the bench in their 3-0 win over Real Oviedo on Sunday night.
Vinicius came on in the second half and still found the net, joining Kylian Mbappé on the scoresheet after the Frenchman’s brace had set Madrid on course for victory at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere.
Alonso said his choice was purely tactical and stressed that squad rotation would be a recurring theme this season.
“Everyone is different. You have to demand the same respect, but the relationship you have is different. In football, you have to understand things and decisions are made with the team in mind. That’s how it was today,” the coach explained.
The Madrid boss added that Vinicius remains an integral part of his plans despite the change in role.
“We have twenty-odd players in the squad and I’m going to try to get the best out of all of them. Sometimes you can have a few minutes and be important, today Vini was important. My intention is that everyone contributes to the team. That’s going to be the norm.”
Reflecting on the overall performance, Alonso highlighted Madrid’s control and composure in what could have been a tricky away fixture.
“We had a very good game. In the first half, we had a very good tempo with and without the ball and we were in control. Sometimes it was tough, because Oviedo were closed, but the rhythm was very good,” he said.
Beyond the result, Alonso also relished the chance to reconnect with former Spain teammate Santi Cazorla, who featured for Oviedo.
“I got a bit emotional because I know the moment he is enjoying here, after such a brilliant career,” he admitted.
Madrid’s victory keeps momentum firmly on their side as they chase early dominance in La Liga.
