Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has expressed optimism about Victor Boniface’s recovery timeline, following the striker’s thigh injury sustained during international duty with Nigeria.
Contrary to reports in the German media suggesting Boniface might not play again this year, Alonso offered reassurance that the forward could return to action before 2024.
“He [Boniface] has a small injury in his thigh muscles,” Alonso revealed during a press conference. “But it won’t be for six to eight weeks.
We hope that he can play again this year. We now have to wait and see how he recovers.”
Boniface has been a key player for Bayer Leverkusen since joining the club. The 22-year-old has featured in 15 matches across all competitions this season, scoring eight goals and providing one assist.
His consistent performances have been instrumental in Leverkusen’s strong start to the campaign, and his absence is undoubtedly a setback for Alonso’s side.
The injury occurred during Boniface’s international duty with Nigeria, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the damage.
Initial reports hinted at a prolonged absence, but Alonso’s update has provided some relief to fans and the club, as they await further assessments on the player’s condition.
With Bayer Leverkusen vying for success both domestically and in Europe, Boniface’s recovery will be closely monitored.
The team will hope for his timely return as they navigate a busy schedule in the latter part of the year.
Boniface’s form has been pivotal to Leverkusen’s attacking prowess, and his return will be crucial as the club aims to maintain its momentum in the Bundesliga and beyond.
For now, the focus remains on his rehabilitation and ensuring he makes a full recovery.
