South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has expressed confidence in Bafana Bafana’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After leading his side to impressive performances in recent competitions, Broos believes the team’s progress positions them well to navigate the challenging qualifiers.
South Africa is in Group C of the African qualifiers, where they face tough competition, including perennial rivals Nigeria. However, their recent form, including topping Group K during the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, has given Broos and his players renewed belief.
“We Can Do It”
Speaking about their growth, Hugo Broos highlighted the team’s steady development under his guidance. “It doesn’t mean that we have to now think that we are where we have to be. No. But little by little we are becoming a very good team,” he noted.
This evolution, Broos believes, is crucial for their World Cup ambitions. “That will give us the confidence that we need for the next thing we have to do, which is qualify for the World Cup. But I’m confident that we can do it. I think, if SA can qualify for the World Cup it is now because we have quality; we have a good team. We can do it. But we still have to do it.”
Momentum from AFCON Success
Bafana Bafana’s recent unbeaten streak since their semifinal loss to Nigeria in the Cote d’Ivoire 2023 AFCON showcases their resilience and improvement. Their last World Cup qualifier saw them secure a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Uyo, a game where they came close to claiming all three points.
Broos aims to harness the team’s AFCON momentum in the World Cup qualifiers. With upcoming matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in March 2025, he is focused on collecting maximum points to strengthen their position in the group standings.
A Renewed Hope for South Africa
South Africa has not qualified for a FIFA World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2010, but under Broos’ leadership, the team is making strides toward reclaiming its place on football’s biggest stage. With a blend of quality players and a coach committed to their growth, Bafana Bafana’s dream of making it to the 2026 World Cup looks more achievable than ever.
The path to qualification will be challenging, but Broos’ optimism reflects the team’s belief that they have what it takes to make history once again.
For now, all eyes are on March 2025 as South Africa gears up for their next battles in pursuit of World Cup glory.
