Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has reaffirmed his confidence in Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, insisting he never doubted the forward’s ability to rediscover his goalscoring touch.
His remarks come amid recent speculation linking Boniface with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
Boniface marked his return to the starting lineup with a goal in Leverkusen’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Hoffenheim on Sunday, his first since recovering from injury.
The 23-year-old had been sidelined for several weeks, raising concerns over his form and future at the club.
Reacting to Boniface’s performance, Alonso highlighted the significance of restoring the striker’s confidence and ensuring he feels valued by both the team and the supporters.
“I always had faith in him. After his injury, it was essential that he felt important and that the affection of the fans was shown to him,” the Spanish coach said. “That means a lot for morale.”
The Nigerian international had been a key figure for Leverkusen before his injury setback, making a strong impression in his debut Bundesliga season following his move from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
With Leverkusen aiming for silverware, Alonso will be hoping Boniface’s return to form provides a crucial boost in their title ambitions.
