Wydad set to appoint former Al Nassr coach Carreno as Alaousri era begins

Wydad Casablanca are poised to name former Al Nassr boss Daniel Carreno as their new head coach on a one-year deal, as newly elected president Ibrahim Alaousri moves quickly to launch a wide‐ranging rebuild of the Moroccan giants.

The appointment of an overseas manager has been settled on by Wydad’s hierarchy and is expected to be confirmed within hours by Alaousri, who won the club’s presidential elections recently and has made the coaching position his first major decision.

Club officials had initially explored the possibility of handing the job to a Moroccan coach and sounded out several candidates in recent days, but the board ultimately opted for the foreign route and agreed terms with the Uruguayan.

According to Moroccan outlet “Le Site Info Sport”, Carreno will sign a contract for a single season and will arrive in Casablanca with a full backroom team to oversee the first‐team project.

The same report states that Carreno’s candidacy enjoyed broad backing across Wydad’s different stakeholders, with his name having featured prominently in Alaousri’s electoral programme during the presidential campaign.

That prior commitment is seen within the club as a sign of the strong belief in Carreno’s track record and his ability to lead Wydad back to the top of domestic and continental competitions after a period away from the major trophies.

Carreno, 61, boasts significant experience in the Arab football scene. He notably guided Al Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title during his time in Riyadh and has had several other prominent coaching spells in the region, enhancing his reputation as a specialist in managing big clubs under pressure.

Wydad’s decision to turn to a coach with that profile reflects the urgency felt within the Casablanca side to restore their status as regular contenders for silverware and to modernise their sporting structure under the new administration.

Dahmani talks back on the table

Alongside the coaching change, the summer transfer window is expected to bring heavy activity at Wydad as Alaousri targets reinforcements across several positions.

One of the main priorities is reviving talks to sign highly rated domestic star Younes Dahmani, with negotiations over a deal for the player returning to the forefront in recent days.

“Le Site Info Sport” reports that a former presidential candidate had already entered advanced discussions with Dahmani before the club’s elections. However, that contender’s defeat in the vote caused the talks to stall, despite the player’s strong desire to wear Wydad’s red shirt.

The outlet adds that a number of influential figures within Wydad have now urged Alaousri to reopen negotiations, convinced that Dahmani’s technical qualities and profile fit the new project and that his enthusiasm for joining the Casablanca club would make him a key addition.

With a new president in charge and Carreno set to take over the dugout, Wydad are planning a far‐reaching overhaul of the squad during the current summer window.
