Wydad Casablanca, the renowned football club, continued its streak of disappointing results with a 2-1 defeat against Olympique Safi in the thirteenth round of the Professional Football League.
The match unfolded at the Green March Stadium in Safi.
Despite dominating the majority of the game, the “Reds” failed to convert possession into effective play, while Olympique Safi capitalized on counter-attacks.
The opening goal by Ibrahim Al-Bahraoui for Olympique Safi was initially awarded but later overturned after a VAR review exposed an infringement.
Despite persistent attacks by Wydad that lacked efficacy, Olympique Safi seized an opportunity on a counter-attack, with Younes Al-Najari scoring a powerful shot that left Wydad’s goalkeeper Youssef El Mati no chance to save.
At the start of the second half, Wydad’s coaching staff made simultaneous substitutions, introducing Onajem and El Bahri to inject fresh energy into the attacking line.
However, these changes failed to prevent Olympique Safi from extending their lead with a goal by Bonifas Haba, exploiting a defensive gap.
In the 66th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Wydad after consulting VAR, but El Bahri failed to convert it into a goal as Safi’s goalkeeper Khaled El Aouali made a crucial save.
Wydad managed to reduce the deficit with a headed goal by their striker Badi Sambou, converting a cross from Boufiane.
With this victory, Olympique Safi maintains the seventh position with 19 points, while Wydad Casablanca remains in the fourth position with 23 points in the league standings.
The defeat adds pressure to Wydad as they approach the highly anticipated derby in the coming fixtures.
