Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has stated he will take full responsibility for the team’s struggles and is willing to step down if necessary.
His comments came in the wake of a 1-1 draw against IR Tangier last Saturday.
Thembinkosi Lorch, on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, put Wydad ahead in the 30th minute before being substituted in the 65th minute.
His fellow South African, Cassius Mailula, was introduced at the same time.
Lorch, who joined the club in January 2025 on a €500,000 loan deal (approximately R9.9 million), marked his first goal for the Moroccan side.
Despite remaining unbeaten in their last nine league outings, Wydad have drawn their last four matches.
Currently sitting fourth in the league with 43 points from 25 games, the club finds itself outside the qualification spots for continental competitions, trailing behind rivals FAR Rabat and FUS Rabat.
Mokwena has faced criticism for his tactical approach, but he remains committed to his philosophy.
I was recruited to Wydad for a certain style of play that I will not change.
I have worked hard to develop it, and I am convinced that it will succeed here with a little time,” he asserted.
During a visibly tense post-match press conference, the South African coach reiterated his dedication to the club but acknowledged that he would not hesitate to step aside if deemed a hindrance.
If I am the problem at Wydad, I will be the first to ask to return to South Africa. I don’t want to hold Wydad back.
I love this club so much that I don’t want to be an obstacle,” he stated.
With Wydad’s season approaching its final stretch, the pressure on Mokwena continues to mount as the club seeks to secure a spot in next season’s continental competitions.
His future with the team now hangs in the balance amid growing scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
