Wydad Casablanca secure signing of Senegal midfielder Nampalys Mendy

Wydad Casablanca have confirmed the signing of Senegal international Nampalys Mendy as the Moroccan giants continue to bolster their squad in preparation for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

The 32-year-old midfielder has joined the Casablanca-based club on a one-year deal, with an option to extend, marking the first time in his career that he will play in African club football.

The transfer was finalised after Mendy parted ways with French side RC Lens, where he had signed as a free agent.

Despite limited game time in the 2024–2025 season, during which he made just 11 appearances and registered a single assist, Mendy’s arrival signals Wydad’s intent to re-establish themselves as a force both domestically and on the continental stage. Known for his composure and experience in midfield, Mendy brings with him a wealth of top-level European experience.

A product of AS Monaco’s youth academy, Mendy has also played for OGC Nice and spent six years in the Premier League with Leicester City, where he was part of the squad that competed in European competitions.

His stint at RC Lens was less impactful, but his leadership qualities and tactical discipline remain highly regarded.

Mendy has earned 32 caps for the Senegal national team but has not featured since October 2024. Nonetheless, his pedigree at international level adds considerable depth to Wydad’s midfield, which the club hopes will provide a competitive edge ahead of their appearance on the global stage later this year.

The move to Wydad comes despite reported interest from clubs in Major League Soccer, highlighting the appeal of Wydad’s project and the growing stature of African clubs in attracting experienced international talent.

Wydad have been active in the transfer market as they aim to rebuild following a challenging season. Mendy becomes the latest addition in a string of high-profile signings that includes Moroccan winger Nordin Amrabat, midfielder Hamza Hanouri, Burkina Faso international Stéphane Aziz Ki, and Dutch defender Bart Meijers.

His current market valuation stands at €1.8 million, according to Transfermarkt, underlining his continued relevance in the global football market despite limited minutes this past season.

Mendy’s arrival also comes at a time when several Senegalese players are expected to move during the summer transfer window.

Former Senegal international Alassane N’Dour has publicly commented on the impending reshuffle, though Mendy’s decision to join Wydad adds a notable exception to the trend of Senegalese stars heading away from Africa.

With the Club World Cup looming, Wydad’s management is intent on creating a squad capable of performing on the world stage. Mendy’s experience at the highest levels of European football is seen as crucial to that objective, especially as the club looks to blend seasoned veterans with emerging talent.

The signing of Nampalys Mendy reinforces Wydad Casablanca’s strategy to compete beyond the local league and make a significant impact in international competitions.
