Wydad Casablanca’s Board of Directors is expected to retain interim coach Amin Benhachem to lead the team into the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, following the recent departure of South African tactician Rulani Mokwena.
Although the Moroccan giants are reportedly in discussions with experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, club sources indicate that Benhachem has earned the board’s trust thanks to a noticeable uplift in team spirit and performance.
“It was decided to place confidence in interim coach Amin Benhachem, regardless of the final league standings,” a source within the club revealed.
“This decision comes as a result of the renewed positive atmosphere surrounding the team and the encouraging reactions from both players and fans, especially after the Clasico.”
The source added that Wydad is in no rush to appoint a new head coach before the global tournament kicks off, suggesting that Benhachem has a strong chance to secure the role on a permanent basis.
“Benhachem has a golden opportunity to cement his place as the full-time coach, particularly if he manages to secure second place in the league and guide Wydad back into the CAF Champions League,” the source noted.
Wydad will face a challenging group at the Club World Cup, having been drawn into Group G alongside European champions Manchester City, UAE side Al Ain, and Italian giants Juventus.
The expanded tournament will kick off from Saturday, June 14, 2025 – Sun, July 13, 2025.
