Hakim Ziyech sacrifices salary for Wydad move and Morocco return hopes
Morocco international Hakim Ziyech has accepted a significant reduction in his salary to sign for Wydad AC as he seeks to revive his chances of returning to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder made the decision in a bid to regain form and push for a recall to Morocco’s squad, according to Wydad president Hicham Aït Menna.
Aït Menna revealed that Ziyech agreed to a 75% cut in wages in order to complete the move to the Casablanca-based club.
Before joining Wydad, the former Chelsea FC player had been playing for Qatari side Al‑Duhail SC, where he reportedly earned around five million dollars per season.
The move represents a significant financial sacrifice for the Moroccan playmaker, who has prioritised regular football and a return to his best form over maintaining his previous salary level.
Ziyech arrived at Wydad in November but had to wait until January before making his first appearances for the club. Since then, he has begun to make an impact.
In six matches played, he has already contributed two goals and one assist. Among those moments was a decisive late strike against RS Berkane, scored in the closing seconds to secure victory.
The early contributions have offered encouragement for both player and club as Ziyech works to rebuild his rhythm after his time in Qatar.
Once a key figure for Morocco, the creative midfielder hopes that strong performances with Wydad will attract the attention of national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi.
With the next World Cup approaching, Ziyech’s decision to return to club football in Morocco reflects his determination to earn another opportunity on the international stage.
By accepting a substantial pay reduction and committing to a new chapter with Wydad, the experienced playmaker is aiming to prove he can still play an important role for his country when the global tournament arrives in 2026.
