Wydad AC complete signing of South African winger Cassius Mailula from Toronto FC
MLS side Toronto FC have announced the loan of South African winger Cassius Mailula to Moroccan giants Wydad AC for the 2024-25 season, AfricaSoccer.com can confirm
The loan deal extends through July 2025 and includes a purchase option, providing Wydad the opportunity to make the move permanent.
Mailula, who joined Toronto last summer from Mamelodi Sundowns FC as part of Major League Soccer’s U22 Initiative, has been a promising addition to the team.
He managed to score two goals and provide one assist in eight appearances across all competitions.
This move is seen as a strategic decision for both Mailula and Toronto FC.
For Mailula, the loan offers a chance to gain valuable playing time in a competitive league, which could further his development and international career.
He also gets the opportunity to re-unite with Rulani Mokwena, the former Sundowns coach, who is currently in charge of Wydad.
For Toronto, it potentially opens up space in their roster and salary cap as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
With the team sitting in eighth place and looking to return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2020, the move could allow for more flexibility in squad management.
Mailula’s time at Wydad AC will be closely watched by Toronto fans, as his progress could dictate whether the Moroccan side exercises their purchase option or if he returns to Canada as an even more seasoned player.
