'Wrexham ready to shock the big boys' - Arthur Okonkwo eyes history against Chelsea

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is brimming with confidence ahead of today’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Chelsea, insisting his team has the ambition and belief to make history once again.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper sees the tie as an opportunity to build on Wrexham’s remarkable achievements this season and to test themselves against one of England’s elite clubs.

Of Nigerian descent, Okonkwo’s football journey is rooted in London, where he rose through Arsenal’s youth ranks. He recalls facing Chelsea’s academy sides on numerous occasions, experiences that have shaped his development and fueled his excitement for this meeting.

“I’ve played against Chelsea in the academy for years. I know how good of a club they are. I think everyone knows how good of a club they are,” he said, highlighting the special significance of returning to challenge them on a grander stage.

For Okonkwo, the game represents a full-circle moment. From Arsenal’s youth fields to carving out a role in League Two with Wrexham, he has steadily climbed the football ladder. Now, in the FA Cup spotlight, he is relishing the chance to showcase his talents against top-flight opposition.

“It’s going to be a special moment for me to play such a big team in such an important competition. It’s come full circle, playing against them in the academy, dropping down to League Two, coming back up and then having the opportunity to play against them in such a big game in the FA Cup,” he reflected.

Despite Wrexham’s underdog status, Okonkwo believes the challenge can work to their advantage. He stressed the importance of determination and seizing every opportunity on the pitch.

“It just gives you extra motivation and makes you want to fight more and give it everything you have. All we can do against Chelsea is give everything we have and see how the result goes,” he added.
