World Cup 2026: Zwane and Sithole ruled out for Czech clash as FIFA confirms one-match bans after Mexico red cards
Two South African internationals, Themba Zwane and Sphephelo Sithole, will both miss their country’s next World Cup group fixture against the Czech Republic after being shown red cards in the opening match against Mexico.
The pair were dismissed during a heated contest in which South Africa suffered a damaging disciplinary setback, forcing them to finish the game with reduced numbers.
FIFA has now confirmed that both players will serve a standard one-match suspension, with no additional punishment handed down following a disciplinary review.
The ruling offers some clarity for South Africa’s technical team, who now know they will be without two key figures for a crucial second Group A encounter.
However, there is at least partial relief in that no extended bans have been imposed, keeping both players in contention for a possible return later in the group phase.
Attention now shifts to squad management, with midfielder Teboho Mokoena and defender Siyabonga Sibisi both still available for selection. However, their availability comes with a significant warning: both are one booking away from suspension.
Any yellow card picked up against the Czech Republic would trigger an automatic ban for the final group-stage fixture, a scenario that could further complicate South Africa’s path through the tournament if discipline issues persist.
With margins already tightening in Group A, the team’s ability to stay composed may prove just as important as their tactical response on the pitch.
