Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has expressed confidence in his outfits’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing the side is in good form to compete at the tournament.

Mahrez shared his thoughts as the squad prepared to depart for the United States on Sunday, 7 June, ahead of the global showpiece, which begins on 11 June.

With expectations high among Algerian supporters, Mahrez struck an optimistic tone when reflecting on the work completed during the team’s pre-tournament training camp. The experienced forward praised the atmosphere and intensity of the preparations held at the National Technical Centre in Sidi Moussa, emphasizing that the squad had approached the build-up with focus and determination.

The former Premier League star also pointed to Algeria’s recent friendly encounter against the Netherlands as an important test that helped the team gauge its readiness against top-level opposition.

“We’ve prepared well here in Sidi Moussa. We went to the Netherlands and played a good match. I think we’re in good form; the competition will tell,” Mahrez said.

His comments reflect the growing belief within the Algerian camp that the team is capable of competing strongly on the world stage. The friendly against the Dutch provided valuable experience and allowed the coaching staff to assess the squad’s tactical readiness before the start of the tournament.

Mahrez, one of the most experienced members of the squad, is expected to play a key leadership role throughout the World Cup. His experience at the highest level of club and international football will be crucial as Algeria seek to navigate the challenges of the competition.

The 35-year-old remains one of Algeria’s most influential players, combining creativity, vision, and composure in attack. Beyond his performances on the pitch, his leadership and ability to guide younger teammates could prove equally important during the tournament.

As Les Fennecs make their journey to the United States, confidence appears to be growing within the squad. While Mahrez acknowledged that the true test will come once the competition begins, his assessment suggests Algeria believe they have laid a solid foundation to compete effectively when the World Cup kicks off on 11 June.

With preparations complete and the squad now focused on the challenge ahead, Algeria will hope their hard work in Sidi Moussa translates into strong performances on football’s biggest stage.
