World Cup 2026: Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha chooses Messi over Ronaldo before Argentina clash
Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Diaz, widely known as Vozinha, has stirred debate ahead of his side’s World Cup clash against Argentina after declaring that Lionel Messi remains unmatched in football history.
The experienced goalkeeper made the comments while speaking to ESPN as Cape Verde prepare for one of the biggest matches in the nation’s football history in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Vozinha also revealed the remarkable story behind his name, linking it to the 1986 World Cup and two South American football legends.
“I was born in 1986 during the World Cup competitions, and my father wanted to register me under the name of Valdano, who was shining at the time with Real Madrid and the Argentine national team.”
The goalkeeper explained that his father originally wanted to name him after former Argentina striker Jorge Valdano, who helped his country win the 1986 World Cup.
However, administrative complications led the family to choose another famous football name instead.
“Because my father was in military service at the time, the administrative authorities refused to approve the name, which prompted him to choose the name Josimar, due to his great and widespread admiration in the family for Brazilian football and its players at that time.”
Vozinha praises Messi before facing Argentina
The Cape Verde goalkeeper then turned his attention to Messi, who he is set to face directly in the Round of 32 encounter.
“If I had to choose a role model from the field players, it would undoubtedly be Messi; he is a player from another world and a unique case in the history of football.”
His comments became even more notable when he addressed the long-running debate between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Given Cape Verde’s strong historical and cultural connections with Portugal, Vozinha admitted his opinion may not be popular among Portuguese supporters.
“I know the Portuguese might be angry at my opinion, but although Ronaldo is a football machine and the ultimate example of discipline, work and sacrifice, Messi remains unique and unlike anyone else.”
Goalkeeping legends shaped Vozinha’s career
The veteran shot-stopper also spoke about the goalkeepers who influenced his development throughout his career.
He highlighted former Paraguay captain Jose Luis Chilavert and Brazilian icon Rogerio Ceni for their famous free-kick ability, while also praising Belgian goalkeeper Michel Preud’homme, Italian great Gianluigi Buffon and Dutch legend Edwin van der Sar.
Cape Verde head into the Argentina encounter hoping to continue their impressive World Cup journey and pull off one of the tournament’s biggest surprises against the South American giants.
