Kaizer Chiefs Ladies striker Lumka Qhekeka believes promotion push is within reach

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies striker Lumka Qhekeka says “nothing is impossible” as the newly formed side continues its bid to reach the Hollywoodbets Super League in its first season in the women’s football semi-professional ranks.

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies were launched this season and are competing in Gauteng’s SAFA Women’s Provincial League. They sit in the top three, having collected 49 points from 21 matches.

Winning the provincial league would take Amakhosazana into the SASOL League National playoffs, where two promotion places are available for the Hollywoodbets Super League.

Qhekeka was speaking during a joint online press conference with German club Arminia Bielefeld. Asked by iDiski Times about Chiefs Ladies’ prospects, the forward struck a balance between ambition and caution.

“On our end, I don’t want to count our eggs before they hatch,” Qhekeka said.

“So, I’ll just say, we’re taking it one game at a time. But with the way we’ve been performing, it’s quite possible. Nothing is impossible. It’s quite possible. So, I’m saying we’re taking it one game at a time, and we’ll see at the end of the season, what’s in store for us.”

Qhekeka has played a key role in Chiefs Ladies’ campaign since joining from Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. She has scored 11 goals in 16 league appearances and has 23 goals in total across all competitions, including the Engen Cup.

The striker said the team’s development since the beginning of the season could be seen both in its results and in the position it occupies in the league table.

“So, in terms of the progression with the previous club I played for and my current club there is progression and growth compared to when we first started the season,” she added.

“Like you can see, I think it’s quite evident also, with the log standings and the unity within the team. In terms of competing, I feel like we are definitely there to be competing and the progression has been made and it’s quite evident.”

Chiefs Ladies’ position in the top three leaves them in contention for the provincial title and a place in the national promotion playoffs. However, Qhekeka stressed that the squad was focused on managing the campaign match by match rather than making premature predictions about its final outcome.

The side’s progress has come during its first campaign following the launch of the women’s team, with the current standings providing evidence of its strong start. A successful finish in the Gauteng competition would give Chiefs Ladies the opportunity to compete for one of the two places leading to the Hollywoodbets Super League.
