Former Libya midfielder Tarik El Taib believes Morocco have what it takes to defeat France and continue their historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign by reaching the semi-finals.

Ahead of Thursday’s eagerly anticipated quarter-final, the Libyan football legend expressed confidence that the Atlas Lions can overcome the reigning world champions if they produce their best performance.

Speaking to ON Sports, El Taib said Morocco’s style of play makes them well equipped to challenge France.

“For me, I am optimistic that Morocco will defeat France. The Moroccan national team’s style of play closely resembles the French style; both teams play attacking football, and both sides possess the talent and quality.”

El Taib highlights France’s only advantage

While acknowledging the depth of the French squad, El Taib believes Morocco’s starting XI is capable of matching Les Bleus across the pitch.

“In my view, France’s only advantage lies in their bench, which is stronger than Morocco’s. However, if Morocco plays with full focus and delivers their true performance—with Brahim Diaz in attack, El Aynaoui and Ayoub Bouaddi in midfield, alongside the defensive line and Yassine Bounou, the Moroccan team lacks absolutely nothing to reach the semi-finals.”

The former playmaker argued that Morocco’s quality, organisation and experience give them every chance of producing another memorable result on the global stage.

Morocco capable of another famous upset

El Taib also pointed to Morocco’s recent World Cup achievements as evidence that the North African side should fear no opponent.

“The Moroccan national team has previously eliminated Spain when they were at full strength, and also bypassed Portugal in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, so they are fully capable of repeating that achievement.”

Morocco will face France national football team in Boston on Thursday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

The Atlas Lions will also have the opportunity to avenge their 2-0 defeat to France in the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as they look to continue another remarkable run and keep African hopes alive in the tournament.
