World Cup 2026: South Africa Keeper Ricardo Goss draws inspiration from Morocco ahead of Czech clash
South Africa goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has revealed that Bafana Bafana have drawn inspiration from Morocco’s impressive performance against Brazil as they prepare for a decisive FIFA World Cup encounter against Czech Republic.
The Atlas Lions earned widespread praise after holding football giants Brazil to a 1-1 draw, producing a disciplined and courageous display that showcased the growing strength of African football on the global stage.
Their achievement stood in contrast to South Africa’s opening Group A match, where Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico and were left facing mounting pressure ahead of their second fixture.
With their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance, South Africa know they must deliver a much-improved performance against Czech on Thursday evening.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, Goss admitted that Morocco’s display had caught the attention of the South African squad and provided additional motivation.
According to the goalkeeper, performances like Morocco’s send a powerful message to the rest of the continent that African nations are capable of competing with the world’s elite teams.
“That game was actually very good for Africa,” Goss said.
“It gives other African teams confidence that they can compete with any side in the world. We definitely take inspiration from performances like that and from Morocco as well. Now we have to show it ourselves against Czech.”
Morocco’s result against Brazil has been celebrated across Africa, with many viewing it as further proof of the continent’s growing influence in international football. The North Africans displayed tactical discipline, resilience and belief throughout the contest, earning a deserved result against one of the tournament favourites.
For South Africa, the challenge now is to replicate that level of determination and quality when they step onto the pitch against Czech.
A defeat would leave Bafana Bafana on the brink of elimination, while a victory could revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. The stakes could hardly be higher for Hugo Broos’ men as they seek to bounce back from their disappointing start against Mexico.
With inspiration coming from fellow Africans and everything to play for, South Africa will be hoping to produce a performance capable of reigniting their World Cup campaign when kick-off gets underway at 6pm South African time.
