World Cup 2026: South Africa defeat South Korea to seal historic Round of 32 qualification
South Africa secured their place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after battling to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday morning.
Bafana Bafana entered the decisive Group A encounter under enormous pressure following an opening defeat to Mexico and a draw against Czechia, leaving them with just one point from their first two matches. Knowing that only a win would guarantee progression, South Africa delivered a disciplined performance to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
South Korea threaten early as South Africa absorb pressure
South Korea began the match aggressively and created early openings as they searched for a breakthrough.
Just three minutes into the game, Min-Jae Kim connected with a cross inside the penalty area and directed a header toward goal, but a South African defender reacted quickly to block the effort.
A few minutes later, Kang-In Lee was presented with a golden opportunity after finding space inside the box, but his attempt drifted wide of the post, allowing South Africa to survive another dangerous moment.
Makgopa denied before half-time
South Africa gradually settled into the contest and nearly found the breakthrough in the 30th minute.
Evidence Makgopa reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area and fired a powerful effort toward the middle of the goal, but Seung-Gyu Kim produced an outstanding save with sharp reflexes to keep the scores level.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 63rd minute following an excellent attacking move from South Africa.
Tshepang Moremi played a key role in the build-up before squaring the ball perfectly for Thapelo Maseko, who calmly finished into the bottom corner to give Bafana Bafana a crucial 1-0 lead.
The goal transformed the atmosphere as South Africa moved closer to a historic qualification place.
Williams helps South Africa close out victory
South Korea pushed forward desperately in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but South Africa’s defence remained composed under pressure.
Deep into stoppage time, Jens Castrop attempted to pick out Jin-Seob Park with a chipped pass inside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams reacted brilliantly by rushing off his line to intercept and end the danger.
Moments later, the final whistle confirmed South Africa’s progression to the Round of 32 after a determined and resilient display in their final group-stage match.
Mexico, on the other hand, beat Czechia to top Group A and finish above the Bafana Bafana.
