World Cup 2026: Senegal fan rushed to hospital as Teranga Lions suffer humiliating exit

A Senegal supporter was taken to hospital after reportedly losing consciousness during the country’s dramatic 3-2 defeat by Belgium in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, as the Teranga Lions’ painful elimination was followed by fresh signs of unrest within the national team.

The fan was carried out of the stadium by medical personnel after concerns were raised about his condition during the emotionally charged contest.

He is understood to have lost consciousness and was transported to the hospital for treatment. No official update on his condition has yet been released.

The incident came on a night of heartbreak for Senegal, whose hopes of reaching the last 16 were shattered despite taking what appeared to be a commanding early lead.

Pape Thiaw’s side made an ideal start when Habib Diarra opened the scoring after reacting quickest to convert the rebound from Ismaila Sarr’s header, which had struck the post.

Senegal doubled their advantage before the interval through Sarr, whose fourth goal of the tournament also saw him equal Roger Milla’s long-standing record for the most goals scored by an African player at a single men’s FIFA World Cup.

With a two-goal cushion, Senegal looked firmly on course to secure a place in the next round.

Belgium, however, staged an extraordinary comeback in the closing stages, scoring three unanswered goals to complete a remarkable turnaround and eliminate the African side in one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout matches.

The defeat ended a disappointing World Cup campaign for Senegal, who had struggled for consistency throughout the tournament.

They suffered defeats against France and Norway during the group stage before keeping their qualification hopes alive with victory over Iraq to reach the knockout rounds.

The fallout from the elimination has been swift.

Midfielder Pape Gueye has threatened not to represent Senegal again while the current technical team, led by head coach Pape Thiaw, remains in charge.

His reported stance reflects growing frustration following the team’s collapse against Belgium and adds to mounting pressure on the coaching staff.

The future of Thiaw is already under scrutiny. AfricaSoccer.com earlier revealed that previously reported that the Senegalese Football Federation is reviewing the coach’s position after the team’s underwhelming performances at the 23rd edition of the World Cup.

The federation has yet to make any official announcement regarding Thiaw’s future, but Wednesday’s dramatic defeat is expected to intensify discussions over the direction of the national team.

For Senegal, a tournament that briefly promised another memorable World Cup run instead ended in devastating fashion, both on and off the pitch, leaving supporters to reflect on a campaign that unravelled after appearing firmly within their control.
